No ‘American Idol’ on these TVs

What TV's, you ask? Why, turkey vultures of course! Both majestic and disgusting, they capture the spirit of the thermals along the rim of Castlewood Canyon. To see their majesty just look skyward over the canyon. To learn about their other qualities, come meet a live turkey vulture at Castlewood Canyon State Park.

Castlewood Canyon is host to the largest roosting site of turkey vultures in the state of Colorado. How fortunate we are to see a "kettle" of large birds ascending on a warm spring morning! With a wingspan over 6-feet, a turkey vulture is easily observed manipulating its wings and tail to navigate the wind currents over the canyon. This is a real lesson in aerodynamics.

Why are TVs bald? (no, not to put nick-knacks on) Why do they have such large nostrils? Why are they recreational pilots rather than jet fighter pilots? All this (including how they sterilize their feet) will be revealed if you attend Welcome Back Turkey Vulture Day on Saturday, May 16th.

Each year, Castlewood heralds the return of turkey vultures from Mexico. This year, we celebrate on Saturday, May 16 th at Castlewood Canyon State Park. If you wish to see a live turkey vulture, come to the Park's Event Facilities at 10:00am. To get to the Event Facilities, enter the Park 5 miles south of Franktown on Colorado State Highway 83.

Don't forget to stop by the Visitor Center and say hi to Vinnie the Vulture, waste management supervisor of Castlewood Canyon and learn what other wonders are in the Park.

Castlewood Canyon State Park is located 5 miles south of Franktown on Highway 83.
