I am a former community journalist at YourHub.com who lived in Vail for two years before moving to Cody, Wyo., where I live now. I mostly use YourHub.com to keep in touch with my former colleagues at YourHub.com World Headquarters in Denver, but I also like photography and post a lot of photos. Summer stuff
Contributed by: Joel Hunt   on 8/20/2007

I've been keeping busy this summer, mostly riding my bike. It's pretty easy to get around the valley on a bike (if you miss the construction zones in the villages and the afternoon storms). In fact, because Interstate 70 has been clogged recently around West Vail and Dowd Junction because of traffic and there's no alternate automobile route through the junction, it's been faster and easier to take the bike path.

I rode to Minturn on Sunday to check out the annual Eagle Valley Community Fund Rummage Sale and Auction at Maloit Park. There was a lot of good stuff there, especially if you're a jeans-and-T-shirt person like I am. Lots of vintage clothes like 1999 Alpine World Championship coats for $16 and T-shirts for $1 in addition to sports gear, electronics, etc. It runs the coming weekend as well, with all items half price. I'm planning to go again, and if anyone's in the valley, it's worth a look. Lots of people come up from Denver and surrounding states for it.

Also, the Vail Farmers' market is really big and has things like barbecue, pastries, produce (Palisade peaches!), etc. It's good for lunch but better for people-watching.

Last year, it snowed at the end of September, so I'm already looking forward to getting back on the slopes. I haven't brought my bike up Vail Mountain this summer (it costs the full $23 for a bike haul on the gondola even with a pass or a gold medallion, so I figure forget it), but I did make it up to hike around a little.
