I am a former community journalist at YourHub.com who lived in Vail for two years before moving to Cody, Wyo., where I live now. I mostly use YourHub.com to keep in touch with my former colleagues at YourHub.com World Headquarters in Denver, but I also like photography and post a lot of photos. Last day of the season?
Contributed by: Joel Hunt   on 4/8/2008

I'm done for the season (at least Vail's and Beaver Creek's).

Saturday. First run. Zoom Room terrain park. Battleship rail (up, flat, down - kinked). Fall. Ouch.

I fell off the rail, directly onto my shoulder on the snow. I knew something was wrong right away because there was a series of popping sounds like when someone cracks their neck good. I thought I broke my collarbone, so I rode down to the Beaver Creek medical offices.

"It's a shoulder day," the receptionist said.

My left shoulder was popped up and really swollen. Had an X-ray. Grade 3 AC separation of the left shoulder.

ER doctor didn't think it would need surgery and made it seem like I'd make a full recovery, but I have an appointment with an orthopedic doctor this week.

Regardless to say, my season is done except maybe the last day at A-Basin in June.

Too bad. I was getting really good and I'm afraid I'll never be at the same level again.

I'm in a sling for a while and can only read pages at work, Too slow, too hard to design with one hand. Hard enough to type.

I'll update this blog when I get a chance, but it's hard to type.

Bigger bummer: Beaver Creek will close this weekend with about a 90-inch mid-mountain base.

Days so far

Loveland: 3
Copper: 3
Keystone: 2
Vail: 5
Beaver Creek: 43
Total: 56

Hope you heal soon, Joel. Injuries suck. I got to ski Copper Mountain for the first time in January with my cousin. It was awesome!

Saw the doc today. He said full recovery in eight weeks with physical therapy, so no surgery. I might make it to A-Basin a few more times this year yet.

Dude, that sucks. Make sure you take care of that thing, including the rehab. I just had a slight shoulder separation in September, and reaggravated it in December because I hadn't strengthened the joint properly. Get better.
