HubCap: Suburban mayhem
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 7/12/2006

A couple weekends ago, my girlfriend and I were hiking near Frisco and we met another couple from the Denver area. Josh and Jenny said they lived in Littleton because they didn't much want to live in the city. We told them we had spent our first year in Denver in an apartment a half a block of Colfax, and asked if we had enjoyed it.

I said, "Well, you know, there was a little drug dealing and a little prostitution, but it was kind of fun because there was always something going on when we sat out on the front porch." They seemed to be taken aback, but laughed.

I tried to explain that I saw crack and hookers as participatory crime -- that you don't get into much trouble in our neighborhood if you weren't looking for it. I always felt fairly safe, because neither of us had much of an appetite for street drugs or street women, and neither of us drove a car anyone would want to steal. Yes, I never let Emily walk to the corner store by herself after about 7 p.m., but I probably wouldn't anywhere. I don't really think Capitol Hill is that much more dangerous than anyplace in the suburbs.

My beliefs were confirmed when I read Danette Glenn-Havlik's blog on the Castle Rock YourHub.com site. It seems she was awakened at 5 a.m. last Friday by a woman who was patrolling her quiet neighborhood, relentlessly calling for her lost dog. Annoyed, Danette got out of bed and went outside to suggest that the woman wait until a more appropriate time to find the dog, perhaps when the rest of the neighborhood was awake.

She got the finger.

You know what happened next? You'll be surprised. Read Danette's side of the story. Not to sound like a broken record, but nothing like this ever happens in my neighborhood.

Have you ever been scared to pass a gaggle of teens outside a Starbucks? I fear they may call me ma'am as they hold the door open for me. You see there is danger lurking around every corner out here in the burbs.
