HubCap: Un-pimp my ride?

One of the great philosophical tidbits tossed out there by my girlfriend was, "It seems like you just have to work a lot harder to be cool when you become a parent." No offense to anyone who's a parent, of course, but take Brad Pitt, for example: Sexiest man alive, played cool guy roles like Tyler Durden in Fight Club and Paul Maclean in A River Runs Through It. Inspires lust in some people and admiration in others.

Now, Brad Pitt's a dad. He's just not quite as cool or hard-edged when you imagine him changing a diaper as he was when he was flicking cigarettes and spewing anti-society philosophy in Fight Club, is he? Admit it.

We've got a few people who are coming to grips with the decreased coolness that has come along with parenthood, through the ultimate symbol of the family: The minivan.

Brian Phillips, of Highlands Ranch, penned the story " Cool dad comes to grips with minivan," in which he laments the loss of his Audi A4 convertible, but consoles himself by saying " I know that a convertible full of college girls will never give me a second glance while I'm driving it, but when I push that button and the tailgate lifts up like magic.....oh man. That's livin'."

Stephanie Blake, of Parker, more recently wrote in her blog, " The mini-van has become a snack wagon. It should have a plastic hotdog on top. There are old, hard French fries under the seats, crumbs all over the car seats, footprints on the back of the seats, juice stains on the carpet, and the pockets are full of books, snacks and old Happy Meal toys." Then she claims to clean it only once a year.

Guys, it's okay. Rumor has it my dad owned a motorcycle before he married my mom. She made him get rid of it. Then he had kids and took up golf. But as of last summer, he now has his own pool table and a fast car. I guess maybe you just go from being cool to being a cool parent.

My dad did the same with his bike. Makes you wonder if motorcycle ownership is some obscure prereq for marriage licenses kept secret from the rest of us.
