I am a former community journalist at YourHub.com who lived in Vail for two years before moving to Cody, Wyo., where I live now. I mostly use YourHub.com to keep in touch with my former colleagues at YourHub.com World Headquarters in Denver, but I also like photography and post a lot of photos. Talk bad to the media, May 19
Contributed by: Joel Hunt   on 5/19/2007

Here's my version of the Rocky's "Talk back to the media" section, where I'll be periodically sharing some of the feedback we get from out readers.

OK, so here are two of the (probably many) "hate letters" we got after we screwed up a high school sports headline. It was a pretty terrible, bone-headed mistake, but we have three new people on the desk and were having technology problems that night to boot:

"That was the most PATHETIC, DISTURBING thing i have ever seen-----the "Headline" that was attached to the BMHS girls Soccer team "Story" today, Saturday the 12th. Before the game. A depressing photo of the team from 2 years ago. Extremely careless, AND hurtful, not to mention UNPROFESSIONAL. You guys have always been bordering on the edge of Stupid, but this is downright RETARDED. You should ALL be FIRED. CLUELESS and GROSS. I hope everyone that has anything to do with the paper finally wakes up and takes notice of the overall state of the "reporting" in the sports dept. and figures out that you all are lame and full of yourselves. DISGUSTING."

Unfortunately, the writer of this letter sent it to the sports department, which had nothing to do with the mistake. Not to mention the two sports guys bust their butts as many as seven days a week giving the local high school sports teams more coverage than any high school team needs or deserves. You can tell that the person REALLY means it because he or she capitalizes words.

And here's one from a former copy editor at the Daily (who apparently never made any mistakes, although rumor around the office it that he was known for calling Lindsey Kildow "Lisa Kildow" in a headline):

"Hi, former colleagues and forever friends - well done on the sports
cover today "Battle Mountain loses to Golden ... " really got a kick
out of it, as I'm sure did Rogers. Truly a spectacular error.
Stoner, where were you?"

At least this mistake was our fault. We got a phone message once swearing at us and calling us "grammar school interns" after I followed a person's Town Talk (our version of YourHub.com) instructions to the letter, but the person gave the wrong instructions.

And one of our former reporters received a phone message saying that the caller would punch the reporter if they ever met on the slopes - just for reporting that a father was being charged in a ski collision/ski rage incident after his daughter was crashed into and the father punched the offending snowboarder.

Some really great stuff, so periodically when we get this stuff in, I'll share it.

All that capping of words seems so familiar, doesn't it, Joel? Funny stuff, though.
