"I am very proud to be a part of a community where so many individuals of all ages and backgrounds are willing to give of their time and money to help others who are less fortunate. That this spirit of giving is still strong despite the tough economy should inspire all of us."

A public nomination process is used to determine the winners who will each receive an award honoring their commitment to the community. The "Outstanding Youth" winner will also receive a $1,500 scholarship for college or post-secondary education and the "Outstanding Youth Group" will be given $1,500 for their organization. Nominations were received in July and each required a narrative and two letters of support. A wide-ranging group of community representatives, including members of the nonprofit/foundation, business, and government sectors, met in Denver in August to select the 2009 winners.
