"LIGHTS UP ON BRIGGS" DOWNTOWN HOLIDAY CELEBRATION
Help Erie Rotary Club & Erie Chamber of Commerce revive yet another old Erie tradition of holiday cheer when they flick the switch on countless sparkling lights adorning Briggs Street, as well as a 12' Christmas tree. There will be singing, candy canes, hot chocolate and hot apple cider all for free.
Saturday, December 2, 2006
4:00-6:30 p.m.
Santa 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Lights up on Briggs 6:00 p.m.
The Erie High Jazz band will be performing Christmas carols from 4-6, followed by Lifesong Church choir.
We are also doing a Food Drive benefiting the Erie Food Bank. There are donations boxes located at many businesses in Town, the Chamber office and the Post Office.
Christmas in Erie was the envy of all the towns in the area before Colorado was even a state. The first mention of this tradition dates back to 1875. During Depression times of the 1930s, on every Christmas Eve, workers from area coal mines would place a giant Christmas tree in the middle of what is now the intersection of Briggs and Moffat streets. Late in the afternoon, all of the children in town would travel down the street - many of them pulled on sleds or wagons by older siblings - to get presents from Santa.
Please bring canned food or non-perishables with you or you can drop them off anytime through December 13 to the Erie Chamber of Commerce office at 235 Wells St. If you have any questions, please call 303.828.3440.
We will see you at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 at the 500 block of Briggs in Historic Downtown Erie. Happy Holidays!
