Town Awarded Community Recreation/Senior Center Grant

Mayor Andrew Moore announced that the Town of Erie has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the El Pomar Foundation for the construction and maintenance of the Erie community recreation/senior center.

The El Pomar Foundation, based in Colorado Springs, is one of the largest and oldest private foundations in the Rocky Mountain West. El Pomar contributes more than $20 million annually through direct grants and Community Stewardship Programs to support Colorado nonprofit organizations involved in health, human services, education, arts and humanities, and civic and community initiatives.

On April 4, 2006 Erie residents approved the construction of a 60,000 sq. ft. community recreation/senior center at the intersection of Leon Wurl Parkway and County Line Road. The community recreation/senior center will include a dedicated senior citizens area, modern cardio and weight training facility, aquatics center, large gymnasium, and aerobics room. Ground breaking is scheduled for later this year and it is estimated that construction will be complete in December 2007.

Town Purchases Additional Land for Community Park

The Board of Trustees authorized staff to enter into a contract with Community Development Group, the developer of Erie Commons, to purchase approximately 6.9 acres of land along the east side of County Line Road and adjacent to the Town's community park and community recreation/senior center.

The purchase of this property will allow more flexibility for the master planning of the area and increase recreation opportunities in the Town's community park.

The purchase price of $597,240.00 will come out of the Parks Improvement Impact Fund and will then be transferred to the Transportation Impact Fund to offset $597,240.00 of the developers cost of County Line Road improvements which total $1,041,919.00.

Board Adopts Resolution Opposing Proposed Amendment 38

At Tuesday night's meeting the Board adopted a resolution opposing Amendment 38 (also known as the "Petitions" amendment) which will be on Colorado's statewide general election ballot this Nov. 7.

The Board's resolution urges Erie citizens to vote against this ballot question as the constitutional amendment would create potentially severe, personal financial liability for municipal officials and employees, and establish a referendum process that would permit a small number of citizens to force elections on initiatives. The Colorado Municipal League's Executive Board has also voted to oppose Amendment 38.
