Youth volunteerism on the rise

Fast Facts On Youth Volunteerism:
·Youth volunteering is up 12 percent over the last 10 years
·73 percent of America’s 6o million young people believe they can make a
difference
·Teens volunteer 2.4 billion hours annually
·Teen service is worth $34.3 billion to the U.S. economy
·Teens who volunteer just one hour a week are 50 percent less likely to abuse
drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or engage in destructive behavior
·Teens who volunteer are more likely to do well in school, graduate, vote, and
be philanthropic Now with over 11 years celebrating youth volunteerism,The Prudential Spiritof
Community Awards, sponsored in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, will again honor more than 25,000 young people in grades 5 through 12 who have volunteered in their communities.  Ourdeadline for the 2006 program is October 31.  Then, nearly 75,000 young people will be considered for awards in the program, which rewards young people for their outstanding acts of volunteerism. Since the program began in 1995, it has grown to become the country’s largest volunteer recognition program for young people.
The recently named America’s Top 10 Youth Volunteers and specific Statehonorees are available for interviews, and we invite you to meet one or more of these fascinating teens. These young volunteers have made tremendous strides in
helping to solve problems in their communities, and I’m sure you will findtheir stories and perspectives captivating, heartwarming and inspiring at best.
