Building a "Bridge" for a family in need
Contributed by: Sarah McGill on 2/28/2007

My name is Sarah McGill, and I am a Social Work Intern at the University of Denver Bridge Project.

The Bridge Project is a community organization dedicated to increasing social, educational, and career opportunities for children and adults in Denver's public housing neighborhoods. Bridge, in conjunction with the University of Denver School of Social Work, provides services such as tutoring, computer training, literacy programs, ESL classes, outdoor leadership, Boy and GirlScoutsand scholarship programs, as well as family support and case management for participating families.

I am currently working on family support with a very special family in the Columbine Apartments public housing complex. This family has two students who come and participate in our programs every day at the Bridge Project.

The daughter, a high school junior, is working hard in school because she hopes to go to college after graduation.

The son, a sixth grader, has struggled in school for years due toAsberger's Syndrome. As a young child, doctors told his mother he would never be able to read. However, through hard work and perseverance, he is now on the honor roll at his school.

The parents in this family are also remarkable. The mother, despite her own life struggles with severe chronic health problems, has always been a strong advocate for her children and her family. She encourages her kids todo their best in school, and has always supported them in everything they do. The father works hard, but is having trouble finding steady employment.

This family struggles every month to make ends meet. Income is tight, and right now they are unable to afford a bed for the parents, and the kids are sleeping on old beds, the same beds they have had for years. The family is paying every month to rent a bed for the parents to sleep in, which is difficult to fit into their budget.

This family could really use a "Good Knight's" sleep. Theytry sohardevery day to do the best for their kids and this would really help them out. It would also mean a lot to meand everyone at theBridge Project. We see these kids and families growing and changing and working for a better future. Help us build a "Bridge" for this family to help them along the road.
