MAIN STREET AMERICA
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 3/14/2007

Main Street is usually positioned to face the thoroughfare fore which the merchants wanted to engage people who traveled through. Merchants and consumers interact directly and honestly on a personal, face to face basis. Main Streets historical character has lent itself to a historic theme. Antique shops are often found here.

The major commercial street of a midsize town with storefronts facing outward to the thoroughfare. Located side by side with little space between them, these buildings usually feature shops on the 1 st floor, while offices and residences make up the upper- floors. The narrow lots reflect the higher price for real- estate HERE, than in other parts of the town.

The American Main Street intersects at right angles in a rectangular grid pattern. Main Streets' financial health is often viewed as a barometer of the community's economic health. The image of Main Street can be revealed in the photographs of past and present. In its own way, Main Street continues to be at the heart of the economic and social life of a community.

“Citizen work initiatives ought to be the STARTING POINT of most, if not all, forms of publicly supported activities. Policy formulation should begin with the question: “How much work can organized citizens perform for themselves.”
