Rapids’ Marco Bison “All Better” After ACL Blowout
Contributed by: Leslie Teegarden on 10/16/2007

Marco Van Bison, one of the Colorado Rapids' newest mascots, rejoins teammates after sustaining a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) - one of the most common of all sports-related knee injuries.

As a representative of strength and tenacity, Marco says he is relieved that one of the most dreaded injuries hasn't left him on the bench.

According to a person close to the situation, "the club needs him; the crowds need him."

"A torn ACL used to end promising careers, but thanks to modern sports medicine and non-surgical rehabilitation techniques, athletes don't have to be sidelined long-term," says orthopedic surgeon Aaron Baxter.

Since ACL injuries often occur while landing from a jump or pivoting when running, Dr. Baxter recommends minimizing risk by coupling strength-training exercises along with skills training - "Strong core body muscles, quadriceps and hamstrings help control and stabilize motion of the knee."

If you have knee pain, swelling or stiffness lasting more than a few days, consult with your doctor. To make an appointment for a consultation or evaluation with Dr. Baxter, call North Denver Total Joint Specialists at 303-453-2997.
