The i9 Sports spring flag football season in Lafayette wrapped up with many exciting tournament games. As it had been all spring, the weather was a bit spotty, with windy conditions at Angevine Middle School. The Lafayette league completed its inaugural season last weekend as 118 boys and girls played nine weeks of games, concluding with trophies, medals, pizza, and other snacks for all participants. The divisions were named after characters from the movie Narnia, in honor of i9 Sports' partnership with the new Disney film.
The players toughed out another windy day and adjusted their game plans to run more and pass less, which resulted in many very close games. The Gladiators, coached by Mike Poulos, took the Reepicheeps (ages 6-8) Division title with a narrow 26-24 victory over the Rockets, who were coached by Sherm Pontejos. In the consolation game, Jeff Jones' Raptors beat the Generals, led by Jeff Fantalis and Mark Collins, 32-20. It was a track meet in the Pevencies (ages 8-10) Division championship, as the Steve Simmons-coached Cougars beat the Lobos, with Jeff Smith at the helm, 50-45. Third-place was captured by Dale Aychman's Crushers over the Marauders, coached by David Chaknova, 15-12. Relentless capped an undefeated season by downing the Thunder, led by Jeff Wagnaar, 33-12, while the Rattlers, coached by Chuck Reynerson, nipped Paul Caracciolo's Titans, 40-34, for third-place. Relentless coach Thorpe Parsons complimented the Thunder for their huge improvement during the season, giving his team a run for their money in the final game, which wasn't reflected well in the final score.
