EASY SPICE CAKE

2 cups sugar
2 cups water
1 cup raisins or dates
1 Tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 cups flour

Bring to a boil the sugar, water, raisins or dates, and the butter and boil for 5 minutes. Let cool. Mix in dry ingredients and bake at 350* for 30 minutes or until done. Good with Cool Whip or caramel icing.
