Blog Entry 76 of 210 From the mountains to 6th Avenue
Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

Growing basil?

I like herbs, like basil, mint, lemon balm.

I think when I grow up I want to be an herb grower.

I guess an herb farmer doesn't sound finesse enough for herbs, or, you don't need the kind of land a farmer sounds like he/she needs to be successful.

I have tried to grow basil. And I got a few leaves.
I think it needs a more humid environment, unlike that of the 7,240-foot altitude of where I live.

I got started talking about basil farming, because I need to purchase enough to have two cups for the recipe. For the bridal shower.

Have you ever chopped up enough basil to make two cups?

This is for a recipe I am making for the bridal shower I volunteered to co-hostess.
My friend insisted that I "try" out the recipes first.

Oh , , , , OK

So I tried it and I bought a big box, not one of those little flat clear boxes they have in the produce department that looks likd it's meant to hold a teeny tiny purse-sized Kleenex.

No, this was a box, like the size of oh . . . maybe half a shoebox.

So I chop chop chop.

I got one cup.

It smelled great. It tasted good. Yes I made the recipe, it's a shrimp basil fusili pasta dish.

But you see now why I need to become a basil farmer, I mean herb grower.
Here's what I found out about growing basil, in case you want to try it:

I have a bunch of seed packets just waiting to be grown: Dill, basil, tomatoes and squash. I don't have much of a green thumb, but I have dreams of having a little box garden on my balcony. Maybe I'll just go to the grocery store instead.
