Blog Entry 72 of 357 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I adopted a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you as I can. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200-400 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

Even more than I bargained for

I 'm beginning to think that parenting is the ultimate mystery. After all, your kids reveal themselves to you every day and in every conflict and in each happy moment - so if you're paying attention you should know them, right?

Well, nothing could be further from the truth. I think this is because they're constantly growing and aging and maturing and they face a new challenge or fear almost every time they train their eyes on something new; it's a threat! It's funny! It's a dessert topping AND a floor wax...

I knew "M" would have problems envisioning how our possible, future move would take place. It's only natural that a 5-year-old would have questions about the mechanics of such a huge thing -- and besides, Mommy has her fair share of questions, too.

The thing is, "M" seems so mature and so worldly that I've been concentrating on talking to her about what might be called the, "higher aspects" of our move - the sale, the purchase, the basics of contract law and the like. But as it turns out, she's not interested in any of that.

Not in the least...

Maybe it's perfectly age-appropriate, but maybe it has more to do with the fact that she lived infive foster homes between Christmas of '05 and August of '06. Either one would explain why she's suddenly obsessed with asking about each and every piece of furniture in the house and whether or not we're bringing it along to our new home.

Almost as if she's worried about being left behind. AGAIN...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
