To us of the boomer generation, Richard Nixon is, well, "special".
My generation could see with the eyes of youth that this man was the one American of truly Shakespearean dimension, a monster with an insatiable appetite for self-destruction.
Our elders scolded us for thinking such thoughts about the president of the United States. But we were right, as has been proven over the years as the tapes with which Nixon obsessively recorded his criminal conduct in office are dribbled out and analyzed in the press.
Today's paper brings one more revelation of Nixon's depravity from the tapes, a revelation poignant in view of the background of the current occupant of the White House.
As recorded on the tapes, Nixon discussed Roe vs. Wade, observing, "There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that.
When you have a black and a white," he said, adding, "Or a rape."
Barack Obama must have a rueful grin on his face as he reads his morning paper.
