Blog Entry 13 of 333 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

Tonight's Surprise
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 1/14/2007

Well, I got 2 - count 'em, 2 - different "Future Shocks" on Saturday night...
Throughout the afternoon I was busy in other, quieter, sections of the home preparing for a couple of imminent upgrades. Which is a way of saying that those sections of the home were quieter UNTIL I got to them and started doing the things I had to get done.
(Not that it matters, but some of those things included turning off the home's water supply, cutting and draining a cold water line, moving a shut-off valve closer to its source, re-establishing the water flow, then cutting out a 13 square foot section of drywall and building material from the basement ceiling. It might sound like a large job, but around here it's pretty much business as usual.)
Later in the evening - after having to correct "M" (our 5 year old daughter) on the same thing three times within 10 minutes, I asked her if she were trying to "make me crazy." We came to a reasonable settlement as to what she should be doing and we each went about doing them.
She was alone in her room. I was soon approached by The Wif.
Who got the better of THAT deal...?
The Wif said she agreed with my theory but not my deployment of such. She thought I was on the right track so far as the lesson, but disagreed with the terminology I used. Namely my use of the phrase "make/ing/Driving me crazy." It was, in The Wif's opinion, something that would, "come back to bite us" later.
Silly Wif...

As to the second event, it was just that I was first rocking and then carrying, (and later, twice during the writing of this post), comforting, D-Man when I finally recognized something: I was rocking my First Son to sleep. I was comforting him as we went through the various milestones we'd passed, but this was personal; he was suffering from sinus problems and needed someone there who understood his difficultuly.
Well, if Sinus Problems are involved, I'd be hard-pressed to imagine a better guide than myself.

And back to the former bit about "biting us later," I'd be among the first to say that it's both predictible and pointless; as a parent, SOMEthing's going to bite us later. May as well be something we expect, right?

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
