Blog Entry 16 of 337 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I adopted a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you as I can. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200-400 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

What to watch
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 1/16/2007

There's nothing like having kids to make you take a serious look back at your own childhood. Of course the main goal of doing this is to examine your experiences and hopefully determine the exact moment that your parents made their first mistake. Or maybe the Big Mistake that's really responsible for screwing you up for so long.

Just so you have the documentation for the lawsuit...

Well, maybe not. You might instead be looking back at your own life for an example of what's "safe" or "good" for young children to watch on television.

But then again, I barely know you, so who am I to try and guess at your motives?
One of the things you'll realize is that the television programs you were exposed to as a child differ vastly from what's offered today.

Both in quality and quantity - after all, who could imagine that there would ever be an entire channel devoted solely to airing cartoons during every waking hour - but also in content. I mean, who would dare to compare "The Bugs and Daffy Hour" to the "Bratz Hippity-Ho Hizzle?" (The latter show may not actually exist, but I'd be surprised if it didn't.)

So my advice would be to stick with what you know. Thankfully, the Boomerang Channel makes that possible; it runs 24/7 with "Topcat," "Hong Kong Phooey," "Looney Toons," "Popeye," (of television, spinach spokesman and video game fame), and for those suffering - or enjoying - flashbacks, "The Banana Splits."

With a powerful lineup like that, who needs an underpantsed sponge or "Go, Diego Go" (and take your cousin Dora with you and Keep Going!) or the latest, insufferable vision of The Mouse, (the fix is in with that 'mystery mouseketool,' I tells ya)?

Given the question in its purest form, the answer should be "nothing." No TV is OK TV as far as I can tell.

But given those moments when your entire world is on fire and you need something to occupy your children's minds while you grab the extinguisher, fall back on something from your own childhood.

After all, you watched it and you turned out OK, right? (Just don't ask your wife that question. Trust me on this.)

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
