Blog Entry 17 of 330 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

What not to tell the wife...
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 1/17/2007

Allow me to set the stage: The Wife and I had set a date for our wedding and preparations were not only underway, they were set to 11.

My Wife-to-be, my sister and my mother were busy henning things into order. As I hear the story re-told, there was a mere 11 minutes between engagement and ceremony, so they had to work fast.

(Just between you and me, I suspect this is a type of reverse fish story and the actual time was more like 30 to 35 minutes...)

Along the way many crossroads were encountered whereby a consensus would have to be reached and progress could continue. Then, they crossed swords with The Big Issue: an issue so immense that it would actually require my input. And for the first time in the whole procedure I was afforded a peek behind the curtain.

Now, I forget the exact concerns of said Big Issue, (which says more about the issue than it does about me), but I do remember the question and my answer:
Wife(2B): "What would YOU prefer?"

Me: "I'd prefer it to be over."

(I should note that this approach has a very high degree of difficulty and should only be attempted by experts in the field or those willing to walk away from the relationship. I will then further note that I went through with the ceremony.)

So, I've earned my "street cred" in "Things You Shouldn't Be Completely Straightforward about." And it is in that vein that we continue with advice to Fathers of young children...

Yes, todfant stair races are hilarious to watch. We all know that. But the second you reveal the leader board to your Wife, the whole thing is over.

You know better than to feed your child(ren) chocolate donuts, right? So when you break that rule, try telling your Wife that the dark spots on their clothes are stains from dog-food drool, ("Silly me! I forgot to pick up that bowl!) and pray that she doesn't give them the taste-test.

"Honey, he screamed for like - two minutes when I put him down for his nap, so I let him get up. WHY IS HE STILL SCREAMING?!?!?!"

And when it comes to pants and the refusal to wear such among the male children of the home, (Husbands included), you can always claim ignorance as to where they are and whether they're clean.

Because ignorance is a characteristic Wives are always ready to lay at their Husband's feet. So why not play that to our advantage?

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
