Blog Entry 19 of 344 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I adopted a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you as I can. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200-400 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

Just so I'm clear

I probably should have stated this from the very beginning, but I strongly suspect that most of you have already figured it out anyway:

I'm talking here about the experiences of Fatherhood from the viewpoint of an involved Father. And just so we're on the same page, the definition of "involved" does NOT mean that you know the names of your children...

See, when you become the Father of young children your social circle suddenly involves other people with young children. Even if your kids do little or next to nothing those other children, the parents are drawn together by a sense of fellowship, shared experiences and common language, (in the sense that they all talk about poopy diapers).

That's aside from clothing exchanges, birthday parties and the various other kid-centered activities that you'll end up attending. And it's at these events that you'll gain a small glimpse into just how involved the other Fathers are. It's a very wide spectrum and chances are great that you're not going to find yourself at either extreme of it. So take some comfort in that.

But I'm always amazed by - and then sorry for - those Fathers who seem completely disconnected from their child(ren). Sure, at times children can be annoying, but they're FAR from annoyances. They can distract, but they aren't distractions. They're the future, and most likely your only voice in the years that surpass you.
So. What do you hope they say?

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
