Blog Entry 58 of 333 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

The Discipline of Parenting, Part I
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 3/1/2007

Well, The Wif and I have come to loggerheads over the exact level of physical activity we're willing to allow from our five-year-old daughter during the evening hours. Now if you think this is the first disagreement we've encountered, you're crazy. And if you think I'm going to disclose the details of our more serious disagreements, you're even crazier. But more to the point...

It's been almost 7 months since the kids have moved in with us. That time span has encompassed both daylight savings and standard time. It has included times when neither of the parents went to work and none of the children went to "school," to times when each parent worked and the children attended "school." So far the only season we have not shared - at least in part - is Spring.

In short, we have lived through a great many variables and a number of trials already in this short period of time. But one of the constants is the fact that as the sun falls, "M" goes crazy.

Not "funny/crazy" or "cute/crazy," but more of a "feral/crazy:" She runs. She screams. She either chases her brothers or pretends to be chased by them. Her therapist has provided us with a theory or two, but everything feels so unsatisfactory as an answer. So I choose to correct her behavior. (Silly Me.)

"You're getting too loud." "Don't run in the house." "Don't throw your brother to the ground in an attempt to live out a psychologically-satisfying-yet-utterly-untrue scenario." "And DON'T pretend you don't know what I mean!"

Mommy's answer? Tomorrow...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...

I had a Night Crazy child; his brain's control center just shut down at the first sign of exhaustion after the stresses of an ordinary day.
