Blog Entry 59 of 344 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I adopted a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you as I can. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200-400 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

The Discipline Of Parenting, Part II
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 3/2/2007

Our story so far: eventide = wild child. Daddy tries to correct said behavior.

(Dang -- I could've really saved you guys a bunch of time yesterday...)

In my repeated attempts to try and quell the one-girl assaults on our home and the members of our family the other night, I noticed that I was getting "the look" from The Wif. Sure enough, she later suggested to me that we should, "find common ground" on what's an acceptable level of evening noise and activity, because, "that energy has to come out somehow."

I countered that if her attitude was one of allowing "M" to run riot in the house, I was going to start serving the meals I cook IN the pots in which they were prepared, (her main objection to that being that when we visit other people's homes or restaurants the kids need to know how to behave there). She backed down momentarily.

But later countered, (she thinks more deeply), with, "well, there's that whole thing about what's OK in one circumstance isn't always OK in another."

I immediately responded (I tend to think more quickly) by saying that if THAT was her position, I was going to start openly, loudly and unapologetically belching around the house when it was just the family here. After all, that would be OK here if we called it such, but unacceptable - say - in the security line at DIA.

So where does all that leave us? Well, Mommy now tends to shush and try to slow down "M's" frantic sunset activity. I've decided that in the light of everything I already ignore around here, what's one more?

Plus, my home theater can reach OUTRAGEOUS volume levels...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
