Blog Entry 253 of 333 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

A moving testimonial
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 12/1/2007

As our move slowly (/rapidly) becomes more and more real in our lives, it's very interesting to see the effect it has on the various family members. Namely...

Clothes and toys are starting to find their way into storage with the promise that, "they'll come back once we're in the new house." Of course, we expect that once we're in the new house we'll have weeks of newness to explore before the kids remember that certain toys aren't present -- and I only expect my Wif and my Daughter will keep track of the absent clothing.

For such is their way.

But as we pack and take each box, I hear different things from each child. "M" - who seems to have a pretty complete grasp on the whole process - will say, "it's going into storage," and, having visited both of our storage units and seeing that our things still exist outside of our possession, I believe that she is at peace with the concept.

D-Man will make occasional references to the "new house" but I'm not convinced that he knows of which he speaks. In fact, I'm grateful that the "new house" has a fireplace, because that might well prove to be the essential similarity that allows his smooth transition between the two. Maybe.

As for The Binkster, well, he's not yet 2. Soon enough, but not yet. He has no idea what's going on other than the fact that - from time to time - he's allowed to help pack boxes and place a number of stickers on said boxes that will dictate where they will land.

We'll see what happens on that first morning when he wakes up and doesn't know where he is, but I predict a large enough shock that it will negate his 2-year-old year.

I'm allowed to dream, right..?

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday....

Oh - if "tired" only covered it all! we're running around like the proverbial headless chicken at the moment, but there's an end in sight. It's both a threat and a promise at this point but once it's all over I expect to breathe a HUGE sigh of relief. As for "boys bath night," I'll give them the choice of a warm bath or a cold hosing in the back yard, (once the adoption is final), and I imagine they'll only need a single experience of their choice before things are brought back inside. Thank you both...

When we movedd and the kids were little, my first born didn't want to take a bath in the new bathroom because he thought it was scary. Well, there was some really vintage wallpaper in there. It had to go.

Just think how fun it will be to have the kids rediscover their toys. Good luck with the move. It makes me tired just reading about it Chris!
