Blog Entry 269 of 328 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

So long, and thanks for all the snow...

(with all due apologies to Douglas Adams, obviously)

Evergreen. How I miss you already. Your quiet days and silent nights were once perfect for me, because silence is absolutely a gift. It allows you time to think and the clarity to understand that which you're thinking about.

Instead, I have moved into chaos: the house is a mess, the kitchen is a mess and while the kids have defined 'play areas' that consume a large percentage of our square footage, they tend to roam the rest of the land with impunity. Which might be a problem...

The truth is that as I sit here this evening - at my kitchen table and listen to semi's, motorcycles and needlessly-souped-up small cars pass by on the major thoroughfare that our new property backs to, I come to realize at least one thing:

When we hear a siren, it will probably be a "live" event, rather than something that just happens to be on the TV. A dog barking? Likely ours. A street full of snow?

Well, as it turns out, we now live on a street that doesn't get plowed. The irony is more than I can bear, frankly: while in Evergreen we lived on a school bus route that was cleared during the middle of the night. Here in the big city, we live on a street that seems to escape the notice of all government officials.

And this is an improvement, how?

But in my mode of "trying not to HATE the house," I've come to a realization: we have a yard. We have a usable basement. And we have a 2 minute commute to the closest grocer.

More than I expected and more than I experience, to tell the truth.

I may yet find some benefit of this move.

Chris Stone will continue to blog at this URI but will attach it to Arvada's hub, lest he write something worth publishing that he's unable to read in another location...

So you moved for the kids. As they say in New Zealand...."Good on ya, mate!"

Good luck in your new house! Moving is pure craziness, but once you settle in, it'll all work out!

In Evergreen, our only safe outdoor play area was our deck and it took 35 minutes to get to the nearest park. Plus, it only takes 15 minutes to get to Grandmas now - a full hour less than it used to. On some level, I know this is a good move; now I just have to convince myself...
