Blog Entry 182 of 184 From the mountains to 6th Avenue

Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

I don't know what came over me, but I tried some spring cleaning the other day and found it so not relaxing, but so necessary.

I ripped the covers off the couch cushions. This is fairly easy because the covers have zippers. I don't think I did too much damage.

I threw them in the washing machine and hoped for the best . . . or better anyway.

And they did look better.

Not nearly so grundgy, as if they had just been removed from the seat of a 52' Chevy Pickup.

The trick was getting the cushion back inside the tight-fitting covers.

For awhile I felt like I was no match for the cushions because they are fairly stiff, thick monsters, not flexible.

It became a bizarre form of exercise because I had to arm wrestle the stiff foam cushions to force them back into the slip covers. After I did a couple, I decided this was a chore best undertaken as a series project. Which means . . . will finish this later.

This is unlike the spring cleaning of the yard, which my husband arranged to do by hiring a crew to come and rake the entire half acre to be rid of the nasty sharp, unfriendly pine needles and pine cones.

It took several men most of a morning,.

I guess this might easily be compared to the effort required to stuff cushions back into their slip covers - with one exception.

One job was seen through to completion.

They say you burn a lot of calories while cleaning. I know it took a lot of effort to shove my closet door closed once I stuffed it full of winter coats!
