Blog Entry 186 of 190 From the mountains to 6th Avenue
Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

RTD parking lots getting full
Contributed by: Karen Groves   on 6/9/2008

As the price of gas guts the pocketbook, the commute for anyone becomes more painful. Fortunately I can get away with riding the bus most days. Otherwise it's a 60-mile round trip at least.

I have noticed more people riding the bus. There is always more of a crowd on Mondays and fewer people on Fridays.

The RTD parking lots are full. The huge lot at Cold Spring almost overflows into the Federal Center.

I've noticed there is almost always someone at the ticket counter at Civic Center Station buying tickets, or asking the ticket seller if someone turned in a cell phone.

The gas tank on my husband's truck if filled would cost $80, and my little Subaru costs around $50.

As I was driving home today, someone on NPR said "I'm just wondering how far it will go? Americans don't protest enough."

I thought, yeah, we don't protest enough.

I used to protest when I was in college. A little tear gas, a little knot in the stomach. I can do that.

But who would listen and who would care?
