Blog Entry 190 of 197 From the mountains to 6th Avenue
Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

There's a bear in my yard

The phone rang.
I wasn't doing anything unusual on a Tuesday night.
Watching the Olympics.
Synchronized diving.

I thought it was impressive. I am not as excited about it as Clint Hurdle seemed to be, but hey, everybody has their own tastes.

Back to the phone.
As I walked toward the dining room, I saw him. Or maybe it's a she.
A bear.
It looked more dark brown than black.

I tried to talk to the person who called without gasping but finally had to stop her.

"I'm sorry I have to interrupt you, a bear just walked through my backyard!" I said as I moved as close as I could get to the windows that face the backyard.

There was something thrilling about this sighting.
The bear was not in a hurry. I watched as he/she lumbered from our yard into our neighbor's yard. There is a split rail fence, strictly ornamental and probably an amusement to wildlife. It's a pole vault competition for deer and elk. Fox just hop under it.

But my throat was closing up.
I had just a sliver of fear to add to the thrill. I had seen the neighbor's garbage tipped over on my early morning walks.

I hear the foxes screeching in the morning.

I saw the photos of the Evergreen Chorale's dumpster that was destroyed by . . . a bear. And I have seen bears here before, but not quite so close.

I watched as he/she stopped at the edge of the neighbor's house, sniffed, then ambled south up the hill toward other houses.

I just can't decide which feeling I want to hold on to. I think I pick thrill and leave it at that. I'm just not sure I will be taking the visitor a welcome-to-the -neighborhood basket.

I saw a bear near our place the other day. Getting to be winter-fat-foraging time...
