Blog Entry 67 of 191 From the mountains to 6th Avenue
Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

Is your home earthquake proof?
Contributed by: YourHub.com   on 7/18/2006

I was in Los Angeles in 1994 when the Northridge earthquake shook from its epicenter in Northridge (in the valley) all the way to the Westchester area near the airport where my dad and stepmother lived.

I was sleeping.

It was early morning, about 6 a.m.

I heard my Dad rumble, curse, possibly stumble out of his bed.
The house was moving and things were shaking. The only way I can describe it is to imagine the house had been attached to Jack the Beanstalks yo-yo string, and he's gently swinging it back and forth.

Glass broke. Sirens started to wail.
We didn't suffer any serious damage but it is a scene I will never forget.

The folks at the U.S. Geological Society in Golden are part of a team to study how to make structures stronger, so they don't collapse in an earthquake.
This article talks about dampers, and simulating a 6.7-magnitude quake.

Washington Post article

Science is wonderful this way. After the Tom Brokaw special I saw about global warming, there may not be any California to protect, or Indonesia.

I am not sure what I can do about this situation. I have tried to stop driving my car to work and take the bus.
