Blog Entry 136 of 190 From the mountains to 6th Avenue

Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

Taking a walk around the block is good for the soul. It also helps to see what's going on in the community of a neighborhood. Today I noticed a Board of Adjustment sign up at Pine Drive near the hairpin turn. Maybe someone is going to enlarge or bump out or bump up.

These signs never really tell you anything other than a date. The air is official. It gives off the sense that something someone wants to do on their property is big enough to warrant a look-see by the county and the neighbors.

Close to my house the heavy machinery sits idle on a Sunday. It works during the week moving land around on the six-acre lot in preparation for many houses. When I drove around the block during the week there were always six guys standing around on the hairpin turn. I am not sure you'd call it working, but there is a new concrete culvert cover-up now where there just used to be a ditch that people got stuck in during the winter.

I guess it is supposed to divert water and snow-melt from going into the new subdivision's main drive.

But . . at the top of the road I met new neighbors. The Bilgraves family moved here from Hawaii and are interested in Lacrosse. Their little guy Connor, who is enrolled at Bergen Elementary School is already a lacrosse player. John Bilgraves said, "Hawaii is a great place to live, but we wanted a good school system and I have always loved the mountains."

He and his wife, Lisa, a toddler, Dane, and big dog Kuma were getting ready for an outing on a beautiful Sunday morning. They're news in the neighborhood. Welcome folks.
