Blog Entry 130 of 190 From the mountains to 6th Avenue
Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

Where's the fire?

Finally, warm weather arrives and chases most of the snow away in Evergreen.
It's Sunday, quiet sunny. The day fills up with chores and phone calls. Nothing too riveting.

The most excitement I had all weekend was a hummingbird sighting.

About 2:30 p.m. sirens began puncturing the calm. Then more sirens. Then more.
It's not unusual to hear a siren. I live close enough to the intersection of Colorado 74 and County Road 73 and the Little Bear is down the way.

But more sirens. Then the clue that not only was something wrong nearby, but confirmation when traffic began to roll by incessantly. This is a narrow winding road I live on, not a thoroughfare, but suddenly it became one, and I realized that 74 must have been blocked off.

I debated walking downtown, but saw my neighbor walking home from work at Evergreen Gallery which is on Main Street.

I asked her what all the sirens, traffic was about.
"There was an electrical fire at Holly Berry," she said.
Read Einar Jensen's on the scene report here

Holly Berry is a flower shop on Main Street in short block-long retail area next to Evergreen National Bank. It is across the street from Baskin Robbins and on a beautiful Sunday Main Street must have been hopping with tourists, and from all the motorcycle traffic, lots of folks had decided to take a ride up to the mountains.

"They've blocked off the highway and there are a lot of people stuck at Baskin Robbins. We stayed open," she said.

I asked her if there were flames, and she said no.

"But, I think there must be a lot of smoke damage to the offices and Girlfriends and Holly Berry."

No one was hurt. When the TV news covered it they led with "The latest on a house fire in Evergreen."

Different information. I think Caroline was probably right, since she was there.
