From the mountains to 6th Avenue
Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

A grass fire put a scare into residents on Evergreen Manor and Douglas Park Road in Evergreen on Sept. 22 at 1:45 p.m.
A swath of a hillside above a residence on Evergreen Manor was burning when Jefferson County Sheriff's Officers arrived, followed by Evergreen Fire Rescue.
Neighbors on Douglas Park Road expressed dismay that it took 15 minutes for the fire department to arrive.
A woman who did not want to be identified said, "I called 911, they sent me to the sheriff, they asked my zip code, and I just kept saying there is a fire here and gave them my address."
A man who was visiting the Greeley family said, "My parents saw it from their window."
He was using a garden hose on the blackened earth when the fire department arrived.
Because it was a windy day, the fire or sparks from the fire seemed to be moving uphill toward a residence on Douglas Park Road.
