16th Annual Komen Denver Race for the Cure
Contributed by: Komen Foundation of Denver on 7/25/2008

What:
The Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, formerly known as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, has set Sunday, October 5 as the date for the sixteenth annual Komen Denver Race for the Cure®. The 5K run/walk starts and finishes at Pepsi Center with an Awards/Survivors' Tribute Ceremony and corporate sponsor Expo. Entry fees are $30 for adults, $20 for children 18 and under and adults 65 years old and older. Family packs for two adults and two children are $90. Prices increase the day of the Race.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. With funds raised by the Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the Komen organization with its Affiliate Network is able to fund breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and community outreach programs. Since its origination in Dallas, Texas, in 1982, the Komen Race for the Cure® Series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a national series of more than 100 Races with over 1.4 million people expected to participate in 2008.

The 2007 Denver Race, which boasted 61,860 participants, is one of the largest footraces in Colorado's history, and the second largest Komen Race for the Cure® in the nation. In 2007, the Denver Race, together with A Pink Tie Affair and additional fund-raising efforts throughout the year, helped the Denver Affiliate raise millions of dollars to assist in the fight against breast cancer. In April 2008, the Affiliate awarded $2.89 million to fund 32 local projects focusing on breast cancer education, screening, treatment and support. Another $1 million was awarded to international and national breast cancer research through the Komen Award and Research Grant Program. Up to 75 percent of the money raised (minus expenses) supports Denver-area breast cancer programs, clinical trials, and life-saving services for women of all backgrounds and ages. The remaining 25 percent is awarded to breast cancer research through Komen national.
This year's honorary Race chairs are the women of 9NEWS. Locally presented by Safeway and nationally presented by Yoplait, media sponsors include 9NEWS, The Denver Post, 5280 Magazine, KHOW and Dex Media.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, the promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
