Evergreen author speaks on tasty new mystery

She's been nicknamed "the Julia Child of mystery writers"- perfect for a wordsmith who combines food and murders with a dash of humor. Diane Mott Davidson recently spoke at the Denver Press Club about Dark Tort: A Novel of Suspense. It's her 13th culinary mystery, featuring caterer Goldy Schulz.

During an April 12 DPC Book Beat luncheon, Mott Davidson revealed professional clues that make her writing work. "A mystery writer goes to the 'emotional' refrigerator, like a cook goes to their refrigerator for their ingredients," she said. She related a web of personal stories triggering feelings that ultimately merged into plot ideas for her novels.

And she does her homework. Where some author's dread the research, she loves it. And her local sheriff's office should know.
On a recent real 911 call, they repeated, "We know who you are." Not from her New York Times bestselling author status, but from her non-emergency background calls getting her details correct. She quipped, "Mystery writers will spank you if you don't get your police procedures down."

Strangely, this culinary author wasn't born with apron strings. Crying the night before her wedding, she confessed to her fianc Jim she couldn't marry him because she couldn't cook. Luckily, he married her anyway.

After studying her Sunset cookbooks, she took to watching Julia Child's cooking show daily. Now Mott Davidson whips up rosemary polenta and short ribs for enjoyment, writing experimentation, and dinner. New recipes infuse into her chart topping novels as essential ingredients.

Mott Davidson brought along a batch of her homemade cookies to the luncheon, proving that a good mystery can also be very tasty.
