"The Last Supper" dramatized, brought to life

As a gift to our community, the Evergreen United Methodist Church (EUMC) is bringing to life The Last Supper, an enactment of the final meal Jesus shared with his Apostles. Set for Maundy Thursday, April 5, 7 p.m., the service is free and open to the public. A good-will offering is available; communion will be served.

The recreation of the Last Supper is visually based on the painting by Leonardo DiVinci. Spearheaded by Tom Clapp, the Men's Group of the church built the set pieces, which were then painted by Pem Dunn, a renowned Evergreen artist and church member. The scene depicts 15 th Century Italy, as DiVinci created it when commissioned by the Duke of Milan. The power of the painting, done in tempera on the actual walls of the dining room of the Convent of the Santa Maria Delle Grazio, is in the characterization of the apostles - reflecting the moment Christ uttered the words that one of them would betray him.

This is the second year EUMC has offered the "Living" Last Supper. The script is written by the Rev. Dr. Scott Scheisswohl, and adapted for EUMC by staging director Jenise Harper. The powerful response in 2006 prompted the church to reprise the service again this year. There will also be special music from the chancel choir, under the direction of Judy Cheatum.

The enactment offers insights into the individual Apostles, as they explain how they came to know Jesus and why they chose to follow him. The narrative epilogue informs how each disciple's life evolved following the death and resurrection of Christ.

Evergreen United Methodist Church is located SE of the Bryant Road/Highway 74 intersection, across the street from Safeway. For more information and directions, call 303-674-4810.
