My Sunny Valentine

This isn't a story of how my husband and I met, but rather a Valentine's Day that he made sure I'd never forget -- and smile in amazement at for years to come.

My best friend from Fort Collins called -- she was coming into Denver on an early morning flight and wanted to meet me for breakfast at the airport. I hadn't seen her in a while and agreed. In the meantime, my husband's work, AMR Combs at the airport, had called and needed some tax document, so he would ride with me to meet my friend.

When we pulled up to AMR Combs, Tom (husband) said, "I have something to tell you." Fearing the worst, my stomach jumped. He continued, " Carol isn't coming and we're going to Cancun."

My stunned response was, "I can't go to Cancun. I have to meet Carol. What about work and school?"

My thoughtful and cunning husband had plotted everything. We had bags packed in the back of our truck. He had managed to get me off work -- without telling any of my workmates where we were going -- and out of school. He had even packed a carry-on bag to change (from old sweatshirts and jeans into shorts and sandals) in the bathroom on the plane.

He had thought of everything -- and the best part was we had five days in the Mexico sun and I didn't have any of the pre-trip stress of packing and making arrangements. For several days I kept trying to put the pieces together of how he did it. To this day, I can't believe he pulled it off without leaking anything. (Although he kept playing James Taylor's "Mexico" the week before and I obviously didn't put anything together.)

He's always had a knack for the surprise -- we've been married for almost 18 years and he continues to amaze me with his thoughtfulness and sense of adventure. He's my Valentine.
