Question: Where are the speed bumps on Placid Drive? Why can't we have a speed bump on Placid Drive? Hiwan Drive has a gazillion bumps and we have none! The reason why I would like to have a speed bump is the crazy amount of traffic that shoots down Placid before school starts at Bergen Meadow and the middle school. I know that everyone is in a hurry, but going 40 miles per hour in this zone where small children wait for their bus is wrong. So once again, why can't we have a speed bump on Placid Drive to slow down the speeders?

Dot talked to
Jean Rose
, an administrative specialist at the Division of Highways and Transportation, which is part of the Development and Transportation Department in Jefferson County.
Rose said, "The first thing I do when someone calls about speed bumps is refer them to the Web site:
here
.
"
This page has all the protocol and procedural information.
She said a petition has to be routed in the neighborhood that would be affected." Only the people who live on the roadway can sign it," Rose said. Then they mail it to her and once received the county traffic technicians go to the site to verify the location. "We have to have 60 percent approval of people who would be affected."
After this, a traffic count is conducted. "There has to be 1000 cars passing in a 24-hour period, and we do the count during the school months and during the middle of the week so we're getting the busiest time periods for traffic. Once that comes back and meets specific criteria, the traffic engineer goes before the Board of County Commissioners for their approval and if approved it goes on a list of approved speed bumps. Installation usually occurs during the summer months, because winter weather can affect roadwork," Rose said. She added that there needs to be a substantial reason why speed bumps are requested.
