SRC welcomes new members to its board of directors

Seniors' Resource Center has announced the election of Karen Buchanan, President and founder of Colorado Elder Care Solutions; Vennita Jenkins, Administrator of The Granville Assisted Living Center; and Mark Martinez, Regional President and Senior Lending Officer of Solera National Bank, as its three new members of its board of directors.

John Zabawa, President/CEO of Seniors' Resource Center, said, "It is gratifying that community members with such diverse backgrounds in both the aging services and private sectors come together in innovative ways to meet the new challenges posed by Colorado's coming demographic age wave.

"Seniors' Resource Center relies on the talents and goodwill of leaders like Karen, Vennita and Mark to carry out our mission by coordinating intensive transportation, adult day and respite care, in-home care programs, mental health outreach, job training, foothills and care navigation services in order to improve the quality of life for our region's older adults," he said.

Formed in 1978, Seniors' Resource Center, a private non-profit organization, is a community partner providing person-focused, coordinated services to enhance independence, dignity and quality of life. In 2008, the agency provided direct services to nearly 18,000 individuals across ten counties. This included intensive transportation, adult day and respite care, in-home care, mental health outreach, job training and care navigation services

Ms. Buchanan is President and founder of Colorado Elder Care Solutions. She has been a registered nurse since 1979 and has worked exclusively in the field of geriatrics and care management since 1996. She is a member of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers, board member of the Western Region of Professional Geriatric Care Managers and secretary for the Colorado Alliance of Geriatric Care Managers. She is also a certified care manager, registered guardian and member of the National Guardianship Association.

"I look forward to the opportunity to meld my years of health care management with the vision of the Center by providing another link to the constellation of services the Center can bring to our older adults," said Ms. Buchanan.

Ms. Jenkins, in addition to her position as Administrator of The Granville Assisted Living Center, serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors for Colorado Homes and Services for the Aging (CAHSA). She is also a member of the CAHSA Legislative Committee.

"It is with great enthusiasm that I begin my service on the SRC's board of directors," said Ms. Jenkins. "I am looking forward to the opportunity to serve the Center's needs by incorporating my knowledge and experience in the area of senior services."

Mr. Martinez is a seasoned community banker, having worked in the Denver banking industry since 1977. Solera National Bank, where he is Regional President and Senior Lending Officer, is a nationally chartered community bank focused on serving the needs of Colorado's Hispanic market. He has three children and also serves on the board of Metropolitan State College of Denver and Alameda Gateway Business Community Association.

"I am excited about the opportunity to leverage my 31 years of banking experience and financial knowledge to help SRC advance its goals, especially as it moves further into its capital campaign in support of what will be a major turning point for the organization, ensuring it can meet the needs of seniors for decades to come," said Mr. Martinez.

"We are thrilled that Karen, Vennita and Mark decided to lend us their considerable talents on the board of directors," said Kathleen Stapleton, board chairman. "They have impressive leadership records that will play instrumental roles in helping Seniors' Resource Center find new opportunities in non-profit service."

As the state's age 60+ population climbs from 780,000 in the year 2009 to 1.3 million by year 2020, Seniors' Resource Center continues to pride itself on meeting the needs of older adults from a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. It does so through concerted outreach to low-income, frail, minority and isolated seniors and their families, based out of five homelike facilities in metro Denver and the foothills.
