Organize against organized religion
Contributed by: Kelly Bleck on 4/27/2006

The Word of God may have been holy in the days of Jesus Christ; however, it has evolved into the word of His human followers.

This goes for whatever religion you practice. The word of God or gods is now the word of the men who have miss-translated it. To clarify, I'm not against God; I'm just questioning those who follow Him.

I can't say that I have read the Christian Bible front to back, but I believe nowhere does it say it is ok to crucify or persecute those who don't share a specific belief of God.

In some religions such as Islam, it is taught if a person does not believe in certain ways, or Islam's God, they must be killed.

Too many people have been killed and/or tortured in the name of God.The Crusades, for example, were a massacre of all those who didn't follow the Pope at the time. It was also a way to reclaim the "holy lands", but that was just an after thought.

When people unite under one banner or religion some tend to discriminate against all others who don't share their beliefs. Countless religious wars have been fought, and are still being fought because of this. One religious sect will declare another wrong and they will go to war.

Today in Israel the war is still waging between Jews and Palestinians of the Islamic belief. They have been fighting for hundreds of years, all over their variances in religion.

The Spanish Inquisition was an event geared toward persecuting those who did not convert to Christianity. Artisits who were not for the church had their works banned from distribution, lives were uprooted.

Arthur Miller, author of The Crucible, said, "anyone needs to feel right to declare someone else wrong."

This proves that if a person believes strongly enough in their specific religion, they will try to prove all others wrong.

Organized religion is one of the most ridiculous ideas of humans' minds. Some say religion is when a person assigns themselves to a sect or church. Holiness and spirituality shouldn't be measured by the amount of time spent on your knees in a house of worship.

Anyone can listen to a preacher and consider himself/herself a Catholic. Anyone can pray in a Buddhist temple and consider himself/herself a Buddhist. Real religion comes from original ideas and views.

To accomplish this you cannot limit yourself to one ideal or religion. Being atheist, agnostic, Jewish or another religion is fine as long as others aren't forced to concede of aren't put down because of thosebeliefs. The best religion may be to have no belief, or a mixture of them all.

Kelly: You wrote a very good column mentioning that nowhere does it say it is OK to "persecute those who don't share a specific belief or God." Here are citations from the Bible and Koran that require believers to kill non-believers. Bible Deuteronomy 13:6-11 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. The Koran 9:123 Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you.

Pretty good. But if you do bother to read the bible, you will find all sorts of atrocities allowed in "his" name. Unfortuately, Islam is often misunderstood because of a few zealots. Continue your research and good luck on finding your own personal spiritual truth.

Kelly, that is quite a condemnation of "religion." I'd have to say that I agree. The trouble though is with the hijackers of "religion." It only takes one loud one to steal the meaning from a lovely symbol. That doesn't change the original idea. The idea is still there but the language that was used to describe it now has a different meaning. Very sad. I hope you continue your spiritual search for true meaning. Remember to be who you really are, and that who you really are is LOVE (oh yeah Wynton Parker said that already!)

Wow. A generalized attack on any and all organized religion and an assertion that the best belief may be no belief or a mixture of them all. Well, I would argue that you shouldn't condemn a certain religion or belief just because people don't follow it correctly. Further, I would say that I believe in the existence of Truth. That is, I believe that this world got here somehow and what we believe in doesn't change the Truth. I want to believe in the Truth, regardless of whether it seems fair or logical. That said, if I my beliefs are the Truth, I think it is wrong for me to persecute others for not believing what I believe. For example, if I believe that homosexuality is a sin in God's eyes (written from a Christian viewpoint, obviously) I don't think it is right for me to do anything but love homosexuals the same way I love non-homosexuals. That doesn't mean I have to approve of their lifestyle, but neither can I hate them for it.

Amen to that :-) These people aren't even following the religion. In the bible there is no asterik next to love thy neighbor that says "* unless he is a homosexual" its just getting ridiculous the amount of misquotations going on...
