Cowboy songs at Hiwan Homestead Museum

From "Boatman's Dance" to "Little Joe, the Wrangler", Mark Gardner and Rex Rideout perform the historic music of the West using vintage instruments and playing styles. As "living historians", they recreate the authentic music of the Santa Fe Trail, the battlefields of the Civil War, the cow camps of Colorado, and more.

On May 20, Mark and Rex will appear at Hiwan Homestead Museum, 4208 S. Timbervale Dr., Evergreen Colorado.

Their concert of cowboy songs will begin at 7 P.M. and last for approximately 90 minutes. The duo of Mark and Rex has appeared at Fort Laramie, Wyoming, at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at Bent's Old Fort in Colorado, at Fort Vancouver in Washington, and many other venues across the West. Music from Mark's cd "Frontier Favorites" is featured in National Park Service visitor center films at Bent's Old Fort and Fort Union, New Mexico, and in the PBS documentary, "The U.S.-Mexican War, 1846-1848".

This cowboy songs concert coincides with the publication of Jack Thorp's Songs of the Cowboys, a new edition of the original book collection of cowboy songs published by Jack Thorp in 1908. This original source of cowboy music has been edited by Mark Gardner, and the new edition includes a cd of cowboy songs played and sung by Mark and Rex Rideout. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the concert. Reservations are required and a $5 donation is requested.

Hiwan Homestead Museum is a 17-room log mansion built from the 1890's through the early 1940's. It was once the headquarters for the 15,000-acre Hiwan ranch. It is operated as an active and lively museum through a partnership between Jefferson County Open Space and the Jefferson County Historical Society.
