Students, firefighters and paramedics partnered to prevent poor driving choices recently.
At the request of Jefferson County Deputy
Dee Patterson,
Evergreen Fire/Rescue performed an extrication demonstration as part of a mock motor vehicle crash at Evergreen High School April 22.
Clear Creek High Teacher
Debra Jensen
and her student council independently made a similar request of the agency and, as a result, hosted a similar demonstration April 24.
Both mock crash demonstrations showed students and staff some of the consequences of text messaging while driving and of not wearing seatbelts.
Students at each school played the role of victims, donning moulage -- faux blood and bone fragments that suggested icky injuries -- and sitting in the crashed vehicles. They waited for paramedics to begin "treating" them while firefighters extricated them, methodically dismantling the vehicle with a variety of tools, from axes to the Jaws of Life.
Morse Evergreen Auto Body donated the vehicle at Evergreen High while Allied Towing of Idaho Springs donated the one for CCHS.
Recognizing the opportunity to prevent crashes among teen drivers and to showcase their abilities, several Evergreen Fire/Rescue personnel participated in the demonstrations: Paramedics

, Lieutenants

After watching their mock crash demonstration, CCHS students retired to the auditorium for another program stressing the consequences of poor choices behind the wheel.
"Prevention isn't always so dramatic," said EFR Community Educator
Einar Jensen
, "but for this audience, the drama was appropriate. We extend our thanks to students at Clear Creek High and Evergreen High, their teachers, Morse Evergreen Auto Body and Allied Towing for helping us keep our communities safe."
