Fire extinguishers, a proven life safety tool, are among the leading causes of local Fire Code violations, according to Evergreen Fire/Rescue Fire Inspector
Shelley Hunter
.
They're often overdue for their annual service, past due for valve cleaning or hydrostatic testing or under-pressure.
To address these violations, Hunter coordinated a Fire Extinguisher Service Day on May 20. A pair of companies -- Integrated Fire & Safety and Cintas -- staffed booths at Station 2 in Bergen Park and Station 3 in Marshdale to help companies and residents verify that their extinguishers are ready for use.
Community members who went to Station 2, such as the staff of the Bergen Park office of Fuller Town & Country, also had an opportunity to learn how to use an extinguisher with EFR Fire Marshal Frank Dearborn. By the end of the day, over 30 people took advantage of that opportunity and learned the secret of "PASS":
• Pull the pin
• Aim the nozzle
• Squeeze the Handle
• Sweep the nozzle from side to side
This event was the first of its kind for Evergreen Fire/Rescue. Hunter said she was pleased with the number of people participating.
"We wanted to help business owners have an affordable means to service their extinguishers and increase compliance," Hunter said, thus improving safety in our homes and businesses.
Together, Integrated and Cintas serviced 70 extinguishers and sold over 30 new ones.
"We hope to continue offering this sort of hands-on outreach," said EFR Community Educator
Einar Jensen
. "The next extinguisher service day, co-sponsored by the Evergreen Curmudgeons, will be associated with our fall safety day. Stay tuned for details."
Evergreen Fire/Rescue's next hands-on educational event is its Free CPR Day on June 7. To RSVP for either the morning session (9-11 a.m.) or the afternoon one (1-3 p.m.), email Jensen at ejensen@evergreenfirerescue.com.
