Eat pizza for heart health on June 30

Pizza and healthy hearts may sound like strange bedfellows, but a unique fundraiser at Nick-n-Willy's restaurant June 30 will raise money to purchase an automated external defibrillator for Evergreen.
Evergreen Public Access Defibrillation (EPAD) is a local nonprofit organization that raises money to facilitate public access to automated external defibrillators (AED) and save the life of someone dying from sudden cardiac arrest.
Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death among Americans. Over time genetic problems, lack of exercise, smoking and poor nutrition can cause a heart to beat irregularly and die unexpectedly.
Bystanders who know how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can help, but the patient also needs an AED and its doses of life-saving electricity administered to her heart. She also needs it quickly: every minute that a heart quivers ineffectively reduces the patient's chances of surviving by 10%.
In less than a decade, EPAD has placed 29 AEDs in high risk, high volume facilities throughout Evergreen, according to President Dave Montesi, and trained employees and the public how to use them.
"We've saved two people so far," he noted, including a school-aged child and Evergreen Chorale Director Mike Weiker.
Each AED currently costs about $1,500. EPAD raises money to pay for half the cost of each unit through its annual golf tournament, but with this event at Nick-n-Willy's Montesi hopes to raise enough money to purchase an entire unit.
It's easy to assist EPAD's efforts: call ahead or stop by the Nick-n-Willy's in Bergen Park (in the King Soopers shopping center) on June 30 between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. and purchase a pizza and salad. Mention that you're supporting EPAD and 25% of the day's net sales will be given to EPAD for the purchase of an AED.
Eating too much pizza may put you on the fast track to needing an AED, but integrating pizza into a well-balanced diet is possible and will add one more life-saving AED to our community.
