Eager readers boost library summer reading program

Young readers really put the ZOOM in "Flutter Buzz Zoom," Jefferson County Public Library's Kids Summer Reading Club. Signups at all libraries totaled more than 9,000 after just the first week, beginning June 1.By end of week two, signups buzzed above 12,600. Kids' total reading hours reached 4,396 and 343 children had already finished their minimum reading goal of eight hours by week two of the of the eight-week program.

First week signups for the Young Adult Summer Reading Club, "My Library-My Space," totaled 2,033. Then they more than doubled to 4,600 by week two. The teens had racked up nearly 3,600 hours of reading time and those who reached the eight-hour program reading goal numbered 255 after the second week.

When kids and teens complete eight hours of reading, they receive a free paperback on Book Award Day in August and are entered into prize drawings, also held in August.

Alison McCombe, head of Children's Information Services said, "This is a really good start for both programs. Signups increased by about 10 percent overall compared with the early program numbers for 2007."

It's not too late for everyone to get in and get reading! The program continues through July 31. Jefferson County Public Library has offered the kids and teen Summer Reading Clubs since the mid-1970s. The 2008 program marks the fourth year for an Adult Summer Reading Club.

This year, adult program signups topped 1,750 in the first two weeks Adults are spending the summer reading hundreds of books. Each book read earns the reader an entry into a prize drawing, held in early August.

Summer Reading Club is intended to provide a fun way to encourage children and teens to keep reading skills sharp between school years and to develop the life-long love of reading for all participants. The program is funded by the Jefferson County Library Foundation and Friends of the Jefferson County Public Library.
