Growing Up with the West Metro Fire Muster

As West Metro Fire Rescue prepares to celebrate the 15th Annual Family Fire Muster, Spot, West Metro Safety Mascot, sits down with 14 year event participant Cameron to find out why the Fire Muster is so popular with kids and families.

SPOT: Cameron how long have you been attending the Fire Muster?

CAMERON: I have been to the Fire Muster every June for the past 14 years. It is a summer time tradition for my family.

SPOT: What is your favorite memory from the Fire Muster?

CAMERON: My favorite memory is playing in the foam. One of the U. S. Forest Service trucks sprayed foam all over the ground creating a wall of thick bubbles and we ran through it. I was covered from head to toe. It was great!

SPOT: What can you do at the Fire Muster?

CAMERON: There are tons of things to do at the Fire Muster. The fire fighters help you shoot a real fire hose. You can put on their bunker gear and practice how stop, drop and roll. Everyone gets a free stuffed animal after they stop at the Teddy Bear Clinic and fix up a hurt stuffed animal. This is where you meet the paramedics and see the ambulance. The Bike Rodeo is awesome. After you put on your helmet you can ride through the bike course on a super tricycle. There's lots of other stuff too. I don't think anyone could every get bored.

SPOT: Now that you are older do you still go to the Fire Muster?

CAMERON: Yes, but now I am a volunteer at the event. I spend the night before the event with my Boy Scout troop and help watch all of the equipment. We also set up the tents and drink stations and things like that. Some of us stay during the event and help with the different activity areas.

I also have two younger sisters that attend the activities and learn all of the things I did when I was younger.

SPOT: Would you recommend kids and families attend the event?

CAMERON: Of course! They will have a great time at the Fire Muster. There is something for everyone and the best part is that while you are having a great time with the fire fighters at each activity you are learning to be safe. They kind of sneak in the learning part because you are so focused on the fun part.

SPOT: You know what they say....Learn, Practice, Play....Be a Fire Fighter for the Day.

Join West Metro Fire Fighters on Saturday, June 13 from 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Red Rocks Community College. The event is free to everyone. The Fire Muster is presented by St. Anthony Central Hospital with help from Foothills Credit Union and Walmart. Visit www.westmetrofire.org for more information.
