On June 1, 2009, the Landmark Designation Committee (LDC) presented their nomination of the Old Rockland Community Church, located at 17 South Mount Vernon Country Club Road, to the Jefferson County Historical Commission (JCHC). The JCHC voted and approved the nomination of the Old Rockland Community Church as the 35th County Designated Landmark Property.
The Old Rockland Community Church was built about 1878 and its primary style could be described as "pioneer Victorian" with minimal detailing or ornament. The cemetery connected to the Church contains approximately 120 souls dating back to 1881.
Properties of exceptional significance to Jefferson County history have the opportunity to be listed as a Jefferson County Landmark on the Register of Historic Places. The newly listed Landmark Properties will be recognized with a Certificate of Designation at the annual Hall of Fame Ceremony, which is scheduled to be held in October, 2009, at the Jefferson County Administration and Courts Facility.
Anyone can nominate a property, but the owner must formally consent prior to nomination review. For additional information regarding the Landmark Program or to nominate a historic property, please contact Dennis Dempsey, Planner III and Staff Liaison JCHC, at
