CDOT is beginning to open I-70 over Vail Pass. In the eastbound direction, crews will begin opening the road in stages. Semi trucks staged at the Vail chain up area will be allowed to travel first. Then, general traffic in and out of Vail will be released. Lastly, semi trucks at the Dotsero will allowed access to the highway.Chain laws are will be in effect for semi trucks over Vail Pass.
The purpose of this phased reopening is to allow slower trucks and traffic to clear slowly and evenly instead of creating an additional bottleneck. Very slow travel should be expected and snow, icy roads exist.
Following the eastbound opening CDOT crews will begin the process of opening the highway in the westbound direction.
