If you are looking for pure luxury in an SUV, the 2006 BMW X5 scores high with leather and wood interior surfaces, a sophisticated all-wheel drive system, front and rear power seating adjustments, rear climate controls, and a DVD-based navigation system.
Purely from a safety standpoint, with an advanced active safety technology, the X5 is an impressive vehicle. Further, its compact size and precisely tuned chassis make it highly maneuverable for an SUV.
Those with budgetary concerns will be glad to know that even the base engine (3.0-liter inline six and 225 hp) is world class in terms of power delivery.
I test drove the 4.4-liter 315-hp V8 ($53,600) which had plenty of power for mountain driving. Power fiends can go with the 4.8is and its 355-hp V8 engine. Fuel economy is nothing to brag about for a car based SUV- regardless of which model you chose, you're looking at 16 mpg /city and 21-22/highway. As with all BMW's the emphasis is on driving, not on practicality.
Certainly you can transport five people in comfort with the 2006 BMW X5, but it wouldn't be a good choice for home improvement projects or any other activity that requires serious cargo capacity.
Another point to consider before making an X5 purchase is that a completely redesigned X5 will debut for the 2007 model year, and it's expected to be much larger and have three rows of seats.
The 2006 X5 gives you a palatial and secure environment to carry you between business meetings and little league games. If you are looking for a fast, agile, stylish vehicle for spirited runs up and down the mountain, you won't be disappointed.
Denis and his wife Jeanie own the Mountain Man store in Evergreen and have lived near Bailey for 17 years.
