2006 Hyundai Azera Limited
The 2006 Hyundai Azera is an all-new, full size entry -level luxury car. Azera marks a new venture for the South Korea based auto maker. It's a move upmarket, to compete with the likes of Toyota, Nissan and Buick.
There are even rumors that Hyundai is testing the waters before they jump into a stand-alone luxury brand along the lines of Acura, Infiniti and Lexus. The Hyundai Azera is a remarkable car for the price ($29,455) as tested.
I test drove the Limited model with the Ultimate Package that includes the sunroof and premium stereo plus power adjustable pedals and tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, memory for the driver's seat, mirrors, and steering column, rain sensing wipers and power fold outside mirrors. In addition it comes with heated leather seats, woodgrain and leather wrapped steering wheel, powered rear sunshade, 17-inch wheels and Michelin tires.
Inside, fit and finish set a new standard for Hyundai, with quality materials and assembly. The Azera is roomy, besting the competition in almost all areas. As I test drove the Azera in the mountains, the 3.8-liter, 263 horsepower V6 delivered plenty of power and performed well on the tight corners of Hwy 285 through Turkey Creek Canyon.
Its one shortcoming is its fuel economy 19mpg city/28mpg highway, as the EPA estimates it trails competitors by as much as two or three miles per gallon. But in design, creature comforts, powertrain and those all important safety features, the Azera offers as much or more than anything else in the class, and at a lower price. Hyundai has sure come a long way since its U.S. debut almost two decades ago with the disposable Excel.
